“It is better to look good than to feel good!”

The quote in the subject comes from Billy Crystal’s “Fernando” character on Saturday Night Live. He ended each interview by reminding the audience, well, you read it above.

In a day when some people are willing to pay hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars to achieve the “right” look, it’s interesting to look back and see a time when people risked their health and even their lives in the name of fashion.

Allison Meier, writing for Hyperallergic, tells of the opening of a new exhibit:

Opened this week at the Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto, Fashion Victims: The Pleasures and Perils of Dress in the 19th Century explores the dangers of style not just for the wearers, but for the people who made the clothing as well. The exhibition of over 90 artifacts was organized by Bata Shoe Museum Senior Curator Elizabeth Semmelhack, and Alison Matthews David, an associate professor at the School of Fashion at Ryerson University who is publishing a book next year focusing on deadly fashion.

And, should you happen to be in Toronto and have an opportunity to see this exhibit, I would be interested to hear of your experience.

Cheers!
